To pair with the piece I used the base colours to create a simple graphic and added text as I had been wanting to with the previous graphic design piece I made. I wanted it to feel more intimate to really emphasise the roots of this project – developing romantic relationships – and the difference from their first meeting to this, a passionate embrace, portrays that well. I did decide to change things for this piece, notably the fact that they are kissing rather than just brushing hands. To finish off the story of Albany and Gaelen given I won’t have time to animate it, I decided to digitalise the key scene of the storyboard, where they touch for the first time and the world bursts into colour – another popular trope when it comes to soulmates I had been centering the animation around. TLDR: my concept revolves around the idea of soulmates in romantic relationships and the tropes in media surrounding them Inevitably I ended up bringing a narrative into it, particularly through our animation tasks, and much of my work for the animation elective revolves around two characters and their story, which you will see regularly on my Tumblr as you scroll. This was a more specific concept I have really enjoyed exploring, looking at different tropes regarding soulmates in the media and my own visualisation of what a soulmate means. Immediately with this brief I knew I wanted to work around the concept of human relationships, specifically romantic ones – my first thoughts were the movement of two people as they progress through a relationship, coming together and connecting and then moving away again.ĭuring the second week of the project, I thought this felt too vague a concept and I didn’t want to make the same mistake I had in my first semester project, so I looked at what research I had already done and narrowed the concept down further to the idea of soulmates. Though what we produce in a few hours won’t be comparable to the quality of a whole animated film, it’s inspiring to look at the smaller parts that make it a whole and incorporate what I can into my own work. Though we will be working with fruits and vegetables, it’s encouraging to see that less can be more when it comes to characters, and even without spoken dialogue, tone of sound, speed of movement and expression can tell a whole story on their own. They’re a classic example of exaggerating features for distinct, cartoonish designs, and it works brilliantly in creating instantly recognisable characters full of personality. I’ve long enjoyed the simplistic charm of character designs from the likes of Wallace and Grommit or Chicken Run, other Aardman productions. Shaun the Sheep (2015) by Aardman Studios caught my eye, not only as a movie I’m familiar with but the work of a studio I’m familiar with as well. In advance of our stop-motion challenge I looked at some popular media that utilised the process.
